Due to the high number of photos that are scanned in an average order, we use what would be considered a 10 or 11 on the 1-12 Photoshop compression scale (12 being the least amount of compression, 1 being the most)
This should not affect quality to the average consumer. The danger lies in opening the file, making edits and then resaving the file over and over. If you are going to do edits, it is suggested that you save your altered image as a TIFF or PSD and then a final edit as a JPEG file so as to not continually degrade the image on each subsequent save.
